SCULPTURAL CHAIRS AND BENCHES: WHEN SEATING BECOMES ART

Ula by Verónica Mar.

Some seats are for sitting. Others are for looking at.

The best do both. A sculptural chair or bench holds a room even when no one is in it. It has a silhouette you recognise from the doorway, a material you want to touch and a presence that turns a corner into a destination.

WHY SEATING?

The chair has always been the designer’s favourite test. It is small enough to make by hand, yet it has to support a human body, so every decision shows. The bench takes the same challenge to a larger scale, becoming almost architecture.

Barcelona knows this well. Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich designed the Barcelona chair for the German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exposition here, and it became an icon of the modern movement. A century later, the city is still a place where seating becomes a statement.

WHAT MAKES SEATING SCULPTURAL

  • Form first. The silhouette is the idea. Curves, folds, voids or a single bold gesture, readable from across the room.

  • Material as meaning. Marble, microcement, mirror steel, patinated metal. The material is not a finish but the subject of the piece.

  • Made by hand, made in few. Most collectible seating is unique or produced in limited editions, signed and certified. No two pieces are identical.

  • Presence over comfort, but not instead of it. A good sculptural chair or bench is still a seat. You can sit on it, and it rewards you when you do.

THE RISE OF THE COLLECTIBLE SEATING

Collectors are buying chairs and benches the way they buy art. At Collectible Brussels 2026, designers explored seating with a difference, from beeswax-and-metal daybeds to inverted sofas. In Barcelona, interior designer Isern Serra described his love for the delicate line where design becomes art, filling a Barceloneta apartment with limited-edition pieces.

That line is exactly where the pieces in our collection sit.

SCULPTURAL SEATING FROM OUR COLLECTION

Ula by Verónica Mar.

MARBLE: VERÓNICA MAR

Ula bench by Verónica Mar is a long, fluid marble bench that thickens, thins and curves with the natural rhythm of the stone. Supported by a single marble leg, it appears almost suspended, inspired by the way the sea shapes coastlines. Each bench is handcrafted in Spain and is unique to its stone. L300 × W56 × H45 cm, or custom. 2024.

MICROCEMENT: ITS A MOOD

Maria Massaad’s studio shapes microcement by hand in layered, continuous surfaces, so each chair feels carved rather than built.

Columna chair turns a chair into a monolith. Built from cylindrical volumes, it recalls the quiet authority of classical columns while staying unmistakably contemporary. Its hand-applied microcement gives it a mineral depth and a matte surface that responds softly to light. W120 × D55 × H75 cm. 2026.

LHE1M chair by SIETES: a black lacquered square seat on two straight legs, pierced by a mirror-polished stainless steel oval loop that forms both backrest and support, against a light grey background.

MIRROR STEEL: ALEX BELLOTTI AND SIETES

ArtFigure005 by Alex Bellotti is a stainless steel chair with a bold Z-shaped profile. Vertical grooves animate its polished surface, so reflections ripple as you move around it, like a figure caught between balance and suspension. W50 × D50 × H80 cm. 2024.

LHE1M by SIETES is a functional joke done with absolute control: a black lacquered square seat pierced by a mirrored steel loop that becomes both backrest and support. Argentinian designer Facundo Parisi works by one rule, form follows fun. 42 × 47 × 80 cm. 2025.

PATINATED METAL: MAXIME HALOT

Alca stool is handcrafted in Belgium in dark patinated metal. Its fluid geometry feels both robust and weightless, and the hand-finished patina shifts with the light. Halot works with the instability of oxidation, letting the steel find its own colour. 45 × 45 × 45 cm. 2025.

HOW TO CHOOSE AND PLACE A SCULPTURAL SEATING

Give it room. A statement chair or bench needs space around it. Set it slightly apart from other furniture so its silhouette reads clearly.

Use a chair to anchor a corner. One sculptural armchair, a floor lamp and an empty wall create a complete reading corner. Nothing else needed.

Use a bench to define a space. A sculptural bench works at an entrance, along a hallway, beneath a window or at the foot of a bed. It marks a threshold and invites a pause.

Mix, don’t match. Pair one collectible piece with simpler furniture: a marble bench at a wooden dining table, or a mirror steel chair next to a linen sofa.

Think about light. Mirror steel loves daylight. Marble, microcement and patinated metal come alive with low, raking light that reveals the hand.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sculptural chair?

A sculptural chair is a seat designed as much for its form as for its function. Its silhouette, material and craftsmanship make it a work of art in its own right, so it holds a room even when no one is sitting in it.

What is the difference between a designer chair and a collectible chair?

A designer chair is usually produced in series by a brand. A collectible chair is made by hand as a unique piece or in a limited edition, signed and certified by the artist, and sits between furniture design and contemporary art.

Are sculptural chairs and benches comfortable?

Yes. A good sculptural chair or bench is still a seat. Presence comes first, but each piece is designed to be sat on and used every day.

Where should I place a sculptural bench?

A sculptural bench works well at an entrance, along a hallway, beneath a window or at the foot of a bed. Give it space around it so its silhouette reads clearly and it can mark a threshold in the room.

Which materials are used in sculptural seating?

Our collection includes sculptural chairs and benches in marble, hand-applied microcement, mirror-polished stainless steel and patinated metal. Each material gives the piece its own texture, weight and response to light.

Where can I buy sculptural chairs and benches in Barcelona?
